Santa Cruz and the surrounding towns are small and can be challenging to navigate. Obey all parking rules, expect to pay more to get close to the tourist attractions, arrive early if you can for less heat, crowds and for easier parking.

Beach shuttles
You can take a free shuttle from the Government building on Ocean Street which takes you , parking is $6 a day for the government center lot. There is a multi level garage across the river.
During the summer, a vintage-style trolley runs a route between Downtown Santa Cruz and the Boardwalk every 30 minutes

City Parking lots
The City of Santa Cruz manages over 20 downtown parking locations, including major garages, pay-by-space surface lots, and free short-term parking areas. During the holidays you may be able to find parking for free.
Personally, When I want to visit the Santa Cruz Wharf or the Santa Cruz Board walk I choose the boardwalk’s parking lots, while more expensive (up to $35 a day) they are the most convenient. I’ve known people to get tickets at metered spaces near by, Parking in neighborhood isn’t a good idea. Otherwise, down town parking lots are easy to find and to pay for space, then take a shuttle.
Santa Cruz has a very good Metro bus program that connects to the bay area. Consider using it so that you don’t have to move the car. Adult riders pay $2 and a trip to San Jose costs $7. Plan well if you choose to ride the bus.
